Coolant Tubing

Purpose

Carry coolant between the engine, pump, radiator and swirl pot without leaking or bursting.

Function

BMRS lines with AN-16 crimped fittings. Crimped fittings remove the hose clamp as a failure point and let the line hold a higher pressure than rubber hose with clamps.

Design Process

All lines are modelled in SolidWorks before they are made, so routing and length are known rather than discovered.

Design Constraints

Routing has to be integrated with essentially everything on the car: frame, engine, exhaust, floor, sidepods, firewall, electronics and bodywork.

Manufacturing Process

Cut to the modelled length and crimped. From the design reports and one-pagers: Lines are sized and crimped in house. BMRS crimping videos must be watched and BMRS guidelines followed strictly; the CR22 report notes these were to be added to the cooling documentation folder. CR22 used BMRS 1 in convoluted PTFE soft lines with 1 in aluminium hard lines and AN-16 fittings, chosen so the cooling system stays serviceable and can be changed easily. The report's own recommendation was that the lines could be sized down to help packaging and cost, which CR25 and CR26I did.
