Fuel Lines

Purpose

Carry fuel from the tank to the rail and back from the regulator, at pressure, without leaking.

Function

High-pressure PTFE-lined braided line with AN fittings, sourced from BMRS. All fuel line is modelled in SolidWorks before it is made.

Design Process

Switching to BMRS line raised the supported pressure, added wear-resistant braiding, eliminated the need for hose clamps and reduced weight by 0.256 lb. Bulkhead fittings are mandatory. Rubber line was not considered because of past reliability issues with sealing and pressure retention.

Design Constraints

IC.5.7.1: fuel lines must be securely attached to the vehicle or engine. IC.5.7.2: all fuel lines must be shielded from possible rotating equipment failure or collision damage. IC.5.7.3: plastic fuel lines between tank and engine, supply and return, are prohibited. IC.5.7.4: any rubber line must run over annular bulb or barbed fittings and use clamps designed for fuel lines with a full 360 degree wrap, a nut and bolt tightening system and rolled edges. IC.5.7.5: worm gear hose clamps must not be used on any fuel line. IC.6.1.1: low pressure flexible lines must be either metal braided hose with threaded fittings, or reinforced rubber hose with abrasion resistant protection.

Manufacturing Process

Cut to the modelled length and crimped. From the design reports and one-pagers: Cut to size (about 4 hr for a full set) and crimp the fittings to the ends (about 2 hr). CR22 used BMRS -4AN line with straight, 45 degree and 90 degree crimped aluminium fittings.
