Engine Oil

Subteam: PowertrainSubsystem: LubricationAssembly: LubricationCars: CR21

Purpose

Lubricate, cool and clean the engine.

Function

Wet-clutch-compatible motorcycle oil, since the R6 shares its oil between the engine and the clutch.

Design Process

Selected to meet Yamaha's requirements (API SP, JASO MA2) with wet clutch specific additives. CR26I ran Motul 7100 10W-40; the earlier standard was Mobil 1 4T 10W-40, chosen for cost, local availability, wet clutch additives, and because oil analysis proved it withstands the harshest conditions the car can produce.

Analysis

Oil samples are sent for analysis after 500+ miles of combined track and dyno running. The engine dyno is used to characterise how much heat load the engine puts into the lubrication system, by running at peak horsepower without the cooling system and measuring the rate of oil temperature rise, keeping oil below 130 C.
