Oil Cooler Adapter

Purpose

Divert oil from the OEM oil cooler location out to the external oil-to-air heat exchanger and back.

Function

A Setrab sandwich plate adapter, repurposed from an existing oil filter sandwich plate. Hot oil from the oil filter enters through the centre of the hollow oil cooler bolt. Below 78 C an internal thermostat sends it straight back into the engine. Above 78 C the oil leaves through the top hole, runs through the cooler, and returns through the back of the plate. A custom cap acts as the oil filter while the OEM oil cooler bolt holds the assembly together and compresses all the O-rings.

Design Process

Repurposing an existing sandwich plate avoided designing a new adapter, and the bypass thermostat means the cooler does not slow warmup.
