Throttle Body

Subteam: PowertrainSubsystem: ManifoldsAssembly: Intake AssemblyCars: CR21, CR22, CR25, CR26I

Purpose

Control the mass of air entering the engine in response to the driver's pedal request.

Function

A Bosch 40 mm electronic throttle body. Because it is electronically actuated rather than cable driven, the ECU sits between the pedal and the plate, which allows auto-blipping on downshifts, torque-based throttle maps, control of engine drag torque during overrun, and improved efficiency during cold start, warmup and idle.

Design Process

Selected for proper incorporation of the Bosch 40 mm electronic throttle body with freedom of use of a Wiggins clamp at the base of the restrictor. Running electronic throttle is what makes the BSPD mandatory. The Koso 34 mm mechanical throttle body was the comparison case, evaluated for its effect on CG height.

Design Constraints

Rules require full BSPD and redundant sensing to run electronic throttle. Throttle plate position and torque output are not linearly related, so the pedal-to-plate translation has to scale minimum and maximum manifold pressure for a given engine speed to linearise the driver's torque request.
