Rear Wing Rods

Purpose

Resist the lift load on the rear wing.

Function

Carbon fiber rods in tension and compression between the wing and the frame, so the swan necks only have to take drag.

Design Process

No part-specific design process is documented. The Rear Wing subsystem design process applies: 1. 2D ANSYS sweeps to optimise element positions and angles of attack for each candidate element count. 2. Verify positions in 3D and increase stack angle of attack where 2D over-predicted. 3. Run integrated half-car runs with the current undertray iteration so element interaction is captured rather than assumed. 4. Full-car yaw runs to check performance when the front stack is reduced. 5. On-track validation with tufting on both surfaces and Flo-Vis oil during constant speed and skid pad.

Analysis

Buckling analysed as a separate load case, since these are slender members in compression under some conditions.

Manufacturing Process

Infused in a tooling board mold milled on the 5-axis gantry, or laid up on a 3D printed mold for smaller parts. Endcaps, spars and skins are made independently and bonded in 3D printed jigs with glass alignment beads controlling bond gap.

Reoccuring issues

CR22 Issue Log, 2024-02-10, Aero. A rear wing cable failed from a bad crimp. The crimp was inspected, the failure evaluated and a new crimp made. The recorded permanent fix is to evaluate all crimping jobs before driving, which is why Aero now has more than one drive day check, and to keep more material on standby.
