Retain the wheel bearing stack on the front spindle and set bearing preload.
Threaded onto the spindle, clamping the bearing inner races against the spindle shoulder through the spacer.
New size on CR26I to accommodate the larger wheel bearing. Positive retention is required so the nut cannot back off.
Machined, then anodised MIL-A-8625F Type III hard coat, sponsored by Tech Metals.
Aluminium, MIL-A-8625F Type III hard coat anodised.
Fault Vault, 2023-07-16, CR22, Manufacturing, Complete Failure. The front left spindle wheel nut would not thread properly and cross-threaded on takeoff, because the front spindle thread pitch is imperial. New wheel nuts were made to M40 x 1.6, but the team ran out of steel after the spindle failure and ended up installing CR21 spindles instead. Shakedown 7-15-23 recorded the same symptom earlier: the front left wheel nut did not sit correctly on the threads and did not require as much torque to loosen as it should have. Improvement for future generations: CR26I sized a new front spindle nut to suit the larger wheel bearing, and the nuts are now hard coat anodised to MIL-A-8625F Type III, which protects the thread surface.
CR26I sized a new front spindle nut for the larger 40 mm wheel bearing and hard coat anodised it to MIL-A-8625F Type III, sponsored by Tech Metals, which protects the thread surface that failed on CR22.
