Front Wheel Bearing Spacer

Subteam: SuspensionSubsystem: Wheel HubsAssembly: Front Wheel SpindleCars: CR22, CR25, CR26I

Purpose

Set the axial spacing between the two front wheel bearings.

Function

Bearing spacing determines how large the bearing loads are when reacting the moment from the tire, so this spacer is a design parameter rather than a shim.

Design Process

Fits are deliberate: interference fit of the shaft to the inner race (+0.0008 to +0.0011 in) eliminates manufacturing clearance and engages each individual ball; clearance fit of the outer race to the housing (+0.0005 to +0.001 in) means only the inner race deforms.

Manufacturing Process

Turned on the CNC lathe, or milled where the geometry is not round.

Full Material List

Aluminium.
