Front Wheel Bearing

Subteam: SuspensionSubsystem: Wheel HubsAssembly: Front Wheel HubCars: CR21

Purpose

Let the front spindle rotate in the upright while carrying radial and axial wheel loads.

Function

An SKF 61908-2RZ deep groove ball bearing with a non-contact seal. Two per corner, spaced to react the moment from the tire's offset from the bearing centreline.

Design Process

Bore increased from 35 mm to 40 mm on CR26I to accommodate larger wheel loads, which forced a larger upright housing. Non-contact seals chosen to reduce drag.

Analysis

Selection criteria: required bore diameter to fit over other components, bearing spacing and its impact on loads counteracting moments, static load rating greater than the worst case seen, dynamic load rating appropriate for average load and expected lifetime, and the lightest and smallest option that meets those. SKF rates bearing life at 1,000,000 cycles at basic dynamic load rating, assuming constant load magnitude and direction.

Manufacturing Process

Purchased.
